Will you vote Outfitters out of business? (Initiative 161)

One of the bitterly debated initiatives on next Tuesday's ballot calls into question one specific way we manage our public wildlife.

Initiative 161 seeks to abolish a type of guaranteed hunting license for out of state residents--known as the Outfitter Sponsored License. Most non-resident licenses are determined through a lottery drawing system. But if sportsmen are willing to pay more, they know they'll get a tag as long as they contract with a Montana outfitter to serve as their guide. Opponents of 161 say the licenses are the result of a carefully crafted compromise. Those for it argue the guaranteed tags amount to a private commercialization of a public resource.

I-161 would take these nearly 8,000 Outfitter Sponsored Licenses (O.S.L.s), and replace them with... Read the Rest of the Story Here

Montana Youth Deer Season Starts Early

By ROB CHANEY of the Missoulian missoulian.com | Posted: Tuesday, October 19, 2010 9:45 pm

Thursday marks what may become a new tradition for young hunters in Montana, as the youth-only deer season makes its debut.

The two-day special season is open only to those ages 12 to 15 who've passed their Hunter Safety course (11-year-olds may hunt if they'll be 12 by Jan. 16, 2011).

"There's been a lot of interest and some confusion," Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokeswoman Vivica Crowser said Tuesday. "People are wondering if it includes elk (it does not)."

Montana's Latest Wolf Hunt Request Shot Down

By EVE BYRON Helena Independent Record  -  missoulian.com  -  Friday, October 8, 2010

HELENA - Even though a federal agency rejected efforts Thursday that would have allowed wolf hunting this year in Montana, state officials still plan to seek approval to remove 12 wolves from the West Fork of the Bitterroot beginning in December.

In a letter faxed to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks director Joe Maurier on Thursday, a deputy director with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said wolves are "secure" in Montana and the federal agency supports a hunting season as a management tool.

But FWS deputy director Daniel Ashe wrote that he can't approve the state's request for a permit allowing an abridged fall 2010 wolf hunt, because that action probably would lead to additional, successful legal challenges.

"No one would be well served by continuing the cycle of litigation surrounding wolf management in the northern Rockies," Ashe wrote.

Montana had asked for an "enhancement of survival permit." READ THE REST OF THE ARTICLE HERE

There's Something Fishy Here--Boat Rigging

With the encouragement of Zack and Blaine, I'm starting a blog on fishing. It will focus primarily on river/lake fishing from a boat in Montana and Idaho.

No Name Featured on Montana This Morning

Monday morning, November 16, CBS affiliate KPAX, which is channel 8 out of Missoula, MT did a piece on No Name Outdoors during their early morning show Montana This Morning. The interview can be seen at this link: Dixon website hit with hunters, anglers.

The Hunters

I met Mary McCracken at the Hunters Breakfast hosted at the Kalispell, MT Elk’s Lodge. Mary, a non-hunter, had recently had a discussion with someone who “loved” Montana but couldn’t stand people running around killing everything. As someone who really respects the tradition of hunting Mary sat down and wrote this article rebuking the individual. It has since been published in Montana Woman and posted on the much read blog LewRockwell.com. We decided to post this article to give you the perspective of a non-hunter who sees hunting in a positive light.

Tradition says that in October shines the hunter’s moon.  This brings to mind a comment that was made to me about hunters by someone who has moved to the Flathead from a big city several states away.

Think of a Facebook for hunters and anglers, and that's what you have with No Name Outdoors, a new Web site created by three friends from the tiny town of Dixon.

"It's based on the premise of, 'Where did you shoot your elk? On No-Name Mountain,'" explained Zach Pitts, who now lives and works in the Kalispell area. "Our mantra is, all game, no name."

GUNS YOU OWN

Recently there has been an email going around titled "GUNS YOU OWN".  When I read the email it instantly caused me great concern as I do own more than a few firearms. This email stated two seperate bills in the house and senate for review and voting. One of the bills, SB 2099, was said to include such requirements as listing firearms you own on your income tax forms and being required to pay a $50 fee for each gun. It gave more details and grim news than just that but that was enough to get me started.
